GAMES AROUND THE WORLD
Games are universal – every one of our students plays games and there are some games, like football/soccer, that almost every one of our students plays or is familiar with. However, from Kenya to the Arctic Village the games may be very different. The goal of this project is threefold: first, we want to create a series of digital stories about games; second, we want to use this universal topic to encourage the students to communicate through the Bridges website; and, third, we want to create one story that is an international collaboration with students from each site working on the same piece.
What’s a Game?
A game can be a sport, a card game or a board game. The key question here is can it be re-created and played by all of our students? For example Monopoly would too complex, but some version of Chutes and Ladders would be workable.
Can it be a computer or video game?
Probably not; the game must be something that all of our students can play. In most of our foreign sites our students do not have sufficient access to computers and/or the funds to buy games. The exception would be a game that is created for the Bridges website that can be played by all of the students. That would only be possible if we could find interns who can turn a board game into an online game.
GETTING STARTED
A first step is finding out what games your students play and then having them use the virtual campfire on the Bridges website to find out what games the students in other parts of the world play. Here are some sample questions:
What do you do for fun?
Do you play any sports?
Which are your favorite sports?
What does your family do for fun?
Tell us about the most exciting game you've ever played in or seen?
Do you have a sports hero in your community?
What are all of the games that you can think of that are played in your town/city/country?
THREE TYPES OF MOVIES
The movies or digital stories created can take these forms:
1. a How-To Movie that explains a game so that students in other countries can learn how to play that game
2. a First Person Movie which describe a student’s (or community’s relationship with a particular sport. (A great example of this is a “Passion for Football” about Sonam, one of Bridges Tibetan students.)
3. an International Football Movie created by students in all of sites working together over the internet.
